Engine Variants
Subaru BRZ-2nd Generation
Subaru BRZ second-generation is based on the revised Toyota-Subaru rear-wheel sports-car system and shared the same mechanical specifications with the Toyota GR86. It uses a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter FA24 flat-four engine with a power of about 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The rear wheels are powered either by a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic transmission. The features a lightweight design, MacPherson strut front suspension, double wishbone rear suspension, and a low center of gravity due to the boxer engine layout, making it one of the most balanced and driver-focused sports coupes in its class.
Toyota GR86 (2022–Present)
The Toyota GR86 has the same platform, engine and drive train as the second-generation Subaru BRZ, but with slight tuning variations in the suspension and steering feel. It is powered by the same 2.4-liter FA24 naturally aspirated boxer engine but it has better torque over the rev range than the previous generation. The GR86 still includes the rear-wheel drive, 6-speed manual or automatic transmission, and a lightweight performance orientation with high aftermarket and parts compatibility, as it is almost identical in mechanical design to the BRZ.
Toyota 86 / GT86 (2012–2021)
The original Toyota 86 (or the GT86 in some markets) has a 2.0-liter FA20 flat-four engine that produces approximately 200 horsepower. It is rear-wheel drive, has a 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox and a lightweight chassis that is intended to be handled, not to be powered. Because of its common platform with the newer GR86, the original 86 is the most common candidate to the 2.4-liter FA24 engine swap, offering much more power and torque without altering the fit to any swap kits available.
Scion FR-S (2012–2016) The Scion FR-S is the North American incarnation of the first-generation Toyota 86 and shares identical mechanical specifications with the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ of the time. It is powered by the 2.0-liter FA20 boxer, it is rear-wheel drive with 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. The FR-S also has a similar lightweight chassis and suspension design and is no less compatible with performance modification. Similar to the Toyota 86, it is a rather good base to replace the new FA24 engine of the GR86/BRZ with, which has a significant performance benefit and remains highly compatible with aftermarket parts.
