The AX15 transmission is a heavy-duty 5-speed manual transmission widely recognized for its strength and reliability in Jeep, AMC, and light-truck applications, most notably when paired with the 4.0L inline-six engine found in vehicles like the Jeep Cherokee, Wrangler, and Comanche. It features a fully synchronized forward gear set, allowing smooth engagement across all gears, and is housed in a cast-aluminum case that balances durability with manageable weight. The transmission follows a top-loader design, which improves structural rigidity and makes internal service more straightforward compared to side-loader units.

Standard gear ratios are approximately 3.83:1 in first gear for strong low-speed torque, followed by 2.33:1 in second, 1.44:1 in third, 1.00:1 direct drive in fourth, and a 0.79:1 overdrive fifth gear, enabling relaxed engine speeds and improved fuel economy at highway cruising speeds. Reverse gear is typically around 4.22:1, providing controlled backing power, especially useful in off-road or towing situations.

The AX15 uses a hydraulic clutch system, supports rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive configurations, and is generally rated to handle approximately 300 lb-ft of torque, making it suitable for both daily driving and moderate performance or off-road use. Transmission Variants

1989–1993 AX15 (Internal Slave Cylinder)

Early AX15 transmissions used an internal hydraulic clutch slave cylinder mounted inside the bellhousing. While functional, this design made clutch or slave cylinder service labor-intensive, as the transmission had to be removed for repairs. These early units are still strong and reliable but are generally considered less convenient to maintain compared to later versions.

11994–1999 AX15 (External Slave Cylinder)

Later AX15 variants switched to an external slave cylinder, greatly improving serviceability and reducing maintenance time and cost. These models also benefited from improved gear metallurgy and a slightly revised, stronger case design. Because of these refinements, external-slave AX15 transmissions are typically the most sought-after for swaps and long-term ownership.

Input Shaft / Pilot Tip Variations

AX15 input shaft design evolved over time, with early models (approximately 1988–1991) using a smaller pilot tip around 0.59 inches in diameter. From roughly 1992 onward, Jeep adopted a larger 0.75-inch pilot tip, improving strength and compatibility with updated crankshaft and pilot bearing designs. This difference is critical when mixing engines, bellhousings, or clutch components across model years.
