The Honda J35 engine is a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine from Honda’s J-series, designed for smooth performance, reliability, and everyday efficiency. It features an aluminum alloy block and cylinder heads with a 60-degree V6 layout, SOHC or DOHC configuration depending on the variant, and 24 valves with Honda’s VTEC or i-VTEC technology for improved power and fuel economy. The engine typically produces 240 to 310 horsepower and 242 to 275 lb-ft of torque, depending on tuning and application.

Most versions use multi-point fuel injection, with later models featuring direct injection for better efficiency and emissions control. The J35 runs on regular unleaded gasoline, meets modern emission standards, and is commonly paired with automatic or CVT transmissions in front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive layouts. Known for its durability, quiet operation, and strong low- to mid-range torque, the J35 engine is widely used in Honda and Acura sedans, SUVs, minivans, and pickup trucks.

Engine Variants

J35A Series

The J35A series represents the earliest generation of Honda’s 3.5-liter J-series V6 engines and marked Honda’s first widespread use of VTEC technology on a large-displacement V6. These engines were designed to deliver smooth power and strong mid-range torque while maintaining Honda’s reputation for reliability. Commonly found in early Honda Odyssey and Pilot models, as well as Acura RL and TL sedans, variants such as the J35A4 and J35A8 focused on refinement and durability rather than outright fuel efficiency. They laid the foundation for later improvements in performance and emissions control within the J-series lineup.    

J35Z Series

The J35Z series introduced notable advancements in efficiency and engine management, most importantly i-VTEC and Variable Cylinder Management (VCM). These technologies allowed the engine to adjust valve timing more precisely and deactivate cylinders under light loads, improving fuel economy without sacrificing performance. Engines like the J35Z3, used in the Honda Accord Coupe, and the J35Z6, found in the Acura TL, offered a balanced blend of power, responsiveness, and reduced fuel consumption. This series marked Honda’s transition toward more environmentally conscious engine designs while still maintaining strong V6 performance.    

J35Y Series

The J35Y series, part of Honda’s Earth Dreams Technology initiative, represents the most advanced evolution of the J35 engine family. These engines feature direct fuel injection, improved VCM systems, and updated internal components to enhance both power output and efficiency while meeting stricter emissions standards. Found in modern Honda and Acura vehicles such as the Pilot (J35Y8) and Odyssey, the J35Y engines deliver strong acceleration, smoother operation, and improved fuel economy compared to earlier versions. This series reflects Honda’s effort to balance performance, efficiency, and environmental responsibility in its latest V6 designs.
