BMW 328i Engine

Specifications

The 328i engine is equipped with BMW’s N20B20A 2.0-liter inline-four petrol engine, featuring TwinPower Turbo technology with a twin-scroll turbocharger and direct fuel injection for efficient power delivery. This four-cylinder engine has a displacement of 1,997 cc, bore and stroke of 84 mm × 90.1 mm, and a compression ratio around 10:1. It produces a maximum output of about 245 hp (approximately 180 kW) at around 5000–6500 rpm and a strong peak torque of about 350 Nm available from as low as 1250 rpm up to 4800 rpm, giving brisk acceleration and flexible mid-range performance. With four valves per cylinder, twin-scroll turbocharging, and efficient high-precision injection, the engine balances spirited performance with respectable efficiency and meets Euro 5 emissions standards.

Designed to replace a larger naturally aspirated engine without sacrificing character, the N20 combines responsive throttle, efficient combustion and refined power delivery in a compact package, making it a defining feature of the 328i’s sporty yet efficient drive.    

Engine Variants

F30/F31/F34 (6th Gen, 2012–2016)

The sixth-generation 3 Series, covering the F30 sedan, F31 wagon, and F34 Gran Turismo, primarily featured the N20B20 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine. This engine produced around 240–245 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, offering a balance of performance and efficiency. In some early models and specific markets, BMW used the N13 engine as an alternative. The lineup emphasized modern turbocharged efficiency and lighter construction bmw x5 engine compared to the previous generation. 

F30 LCI (2016 Facelift)

For the 2016 model year, BMW updated the 328i with the new B48B20 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine, marking the final year of the 328i designation before it was replaced by the 330i. The facelift brought slight improvements in engine smoothness, responsiveness, and fuel efficiency, alongside minor exterior and interior design updates.

E90/E91/E92/E93 (5th Gen, 2007–2011)

The fifth-generation 3 Series, encompassing the E90 sedan, E91 wagon, E92 coupe, and E93 convertible, was powered by a 3.0-liter naturally aspirated inline-six engine, either the N52 or N53 depending on market and year. Output was comparable to today’s 328i levels, although in some markets, the 328i badge was not used, with models instead labeled 325i or 330i. This generation emphasized smooth, linear power delivery and classic BMW inline-six performance.
