Specifications

The BMW S63 engine is a 4.4-liter (4,395 cc) twin-turbocharged V8 engine developed by BMW M as a high-performance evolution of the N63, designed to deliver exceptional power and responsiveness. It features a distinctive “Hot-V” configuration, with the twin-scroll turbochargers mounted inside the cylinder bank valley to shorten exhaust routing and reduce turbo lag, while a cross-bank exhaust manifold improves exhaust pulse flow for sharper throttle response.

The engine incorporates high-precision direct fuel injection, Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing, and Valvetronic variable valve lift to optimize both performance and efficiency. Strengthened internals, increased cooling capacity, and high boost pressures enable the S63 to produce between 547 and 635 horsepower and up to 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque depending on the variant (such as T0, T4, or T5), making it one of BMW M’s most powerful and technologically advanced production V8 engines.

Engine Variants

S63B44O0 (2010–2013)

The S63B44O0 was the first production version of the S63, debuting in the BMW E70 X5 M and BMW E71 X6 M, as well as the Wiesmann GT MF5. Producing between 547 and 555 horsepower, it introduced the twin-scroll turbochargers and cross-bank exhaust manifold design that became hallmarks of the S63, delivering strong mid-range torque and impressive throttle response for its time.

S63B44T0 (2011–2018)

The S63B44T0 refined the original formula with updated engine management and improved cooling, producing around 553 horsepower in standard form. It powered performance icons such as the BMW F10 M5 and the BMW F12 M6 / BMW F13 M6 lineup, as well as the BMW F06 M6 Gran Coupe. This version balanced everyday usability with supercar-level acceleration.

S63B44T2 (2015–2019)

The S63B44T2 brought further enhancements in boost pressure, cooling efficiency, and internal strengthening, increasing output to about 567 horsepower. It was specifically developed for BMW’s high-performance SUVs, including the BMW F85 X5 M and BMW F86 X6 M. This iteration emphasized durability under heavier loads while maintaining sharp throttle response.

S63B44T4 (2018–present)

The S63B44T4 is the most advanced and powerful evolution of the S63, producing between 591 and 625 horsepower depending on the application. It powers flagship M models such as the BMW F90 M5, BMW F92 M8, and the BMW F95 X5 M / BMW F96 X6 M. Featuring improved turbochargers, higher injection pressures, and strengthened internals, it delivers exceptional performance while meeting modern emissions and reliability standards.
