The BMW M52 engine is a 2.0L–2.8L inline-six DOHC petrol engine produced by BMW from 1994 to 2000, widely recognized for its smooth power delivery, linear throttle response, and refined engine character. Developed as the successor to the M50, the M52 introduced technological advancements such as single VANOS (variable valve timing) on the intake camshaft, which improved low- and mid-range torque while maintaining strong top-end performance. Most global versions featured an aluminum engine block with Nikasil cylinder lining to reduce weight and improve heat dissipation, although certain markets including the United States used cast-iron blocks due to fuel sulfur concerns affecting Nikasil durability. 

Later variants, known as the M52TU (Technical Update), introduced dual VANOS, electronic throttle control, and revised engine management systems for improved efficiency and emissions compliance. Controlled by Siemens MS41.1 (and later MS42/MS43 in updated versions), the M52 powered several key BMW models, including the 3 Series (E36 and E46) and the 5 Series (E39). Its balance of performance, smoothness, and reliability reinforced BMW’s reputation in the 1990s for producing some of the most refined naturally aspirated inline-six engines in the automotive industry. 

Engine Variants

M52B20 (2.0L)

The M52B20 produced 150 hp and approximately 190 Nm of torque, making it the most efficiency-focused variant in the M52 lineup. Designed to balance performance with economy, it delivered smooth acceleration and refined engine response, particularly suited to daily driving. This engine was fitted to models such as the BMW 320i and the BMW 520i, where it provided dependable performance while maintaining BMW’s characteristic inline-six smoothness.

M52B25 (2.5L)

Producing 170 hp and around 245 Nm of torque, the M52B25 offered a noticeable improvement in mid-range pulling power over the 2.0L version. It maintained strong refinement while delivering quicker throttle response and better overtaking capability. This variant powered the BMW 323i and the BMW 523i, making it a popular choice for drivers seeking a balance between comfort and performance.

M52B28 (2.8L)

The M52B28 was the most powerful standard version, producing 193 hp and approximately 280 Nm of torque. Known for its strong low- and mid-range torque, it provided confident acceleration and a more engaging driving experience while retaining smoothness and reliability. It was installed in the BMW 328i and the BMW 528i, where it enhanced overall performance and driving dynamics within BMW’s 1990s lineup.
