Specifications

The BMW N20 engine marks a major change in the German engineering history, where the normally aspirated inline-6 has been changed with a powerful 2.0L TwinPower Turbo inline-4, which produces astonishing torque and fuel efficiency. The N20B20, which is used in the F30 328i, 528i, X1, and Z4, employs the brilliant Valvetronic and Double-VANOS technology to eliminate turbo lag and offer a responsive driving experience. Although older models (2012-2015) are characterized by issues with timing chains guides, new replacement parts and revised timing kits have established the N20 as a consistent performer that can support a significant amount of power increase with minimal modifications such as downpipes and ECU tunes.

Being an excellent match of everyday driving and sport-tuned attitude, this turbocharged motor is the best choice of the final driving machine, whether you need to replace a stock BMW N20 engine or use it as the foundation of a Stage 2 car. With proper maintenance, the N20 can easily surpass 300 horsepower while retaining reliability, making it ideal for enthusiasts and daily drivers alike. Its compact design and efficient turbocharging ensure a perfect balance of performance, fuel economy, and driving enjoyment.

Engine Variants

N20B20 (2.0-Litre)

The BMW N20B20 is a 1,997 cc turbocharged inline-4 petrol engine featuring DOHC with variable valve timing and a twin-scroll turbocharger. It was produced from 2011 and used across many BMW models such as the 320i, 328i, X1, X3, and Z4, offering four distinct power levels depending on tuning and application: ~154 HP (115 kW), ~181 HP (135 kW), ~215 HP (160 kW), and ~241 HP (180 kW), with torque figures roughly ranging from 240 Nm to 350 Nm. All versions typically redline at around 7,000 rpm and share a 1997 cc displacement with direct injection and efficient turbocharging, making it a versatile engine balancing performance and fuel efficiency.

N20B16 (1.6 Litre)

The N20B16 is a smaller, 1,592 cc variant of the N20 engine produced by BMW for specific markets where lower displacement affects vehicle taxation and regulations. This inline-4 turbocharged engine delivers around 168 HP (125 kW) and approximately 250 Nm of torque while retaining the core technologies of the N20 family, such as direct injection, variable valve timing, and a twin-scroll turbocharger, allowing good performance and economy within its niche applications.

BMW N26 (Emission-Specific Variant)

The BMW N26 is an emissions-compliant variant of the N20B20 designed to meet stricter SULEV (Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle) standards, particularly for markets like California and other U.S. states with tight emissions rules. Although mechanically very similar to the standard N20B20 with the same 241 HP and around 350 Nm torque outputs its key differences include enhanced emissions equipment such as larger catalytic converters, additional filters, metal fuel lines, and an electronically controlled wastegate to reduce pollutants. These changes do not significantly affect performance but help the engine comply with stringent environmental regulations.
