It was produced from 2011 and used across many BMW models such as the 320i, 328i, X1, X3, and Z4, offering four distinct power levels depending on tuning and application: ~154 HP (115 kW), ~181 HP (135 kW), ~215 HP (160 kW), and ~241 HP (180 kW), with torque figures roughly ranging from 240 Nm to 350 Nm. N20B16 (1.6 Litre)

The N20B16 is a smaller, 1,592 cc variant of the N20 engine produced by BMW for specific markets where lower displacement affects vehicle taxation and regulations. This inline-4 turbocharged engine delivers around 168 HP (125 kW) and approximately 250 Nm of torque while retaining the core technologies of the N20 family, such as direct injection, variable valve timing, and a twin-scroll turbocharger, allowing good performance and economy within its niche applications.

BMW N26 (Emission-Specific Variant)

The BMW N26 is an emissions-compliant variant of the N20B20 designed to meet stricter SULEV (Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle) standards, particularly for markets like California and other U.S. states with tight emissions rules. Although mechanically very similar to the standard N20B20 with the same 241 HP and around 350 Nm torque outputs its key differences include enhanced emissions equipment such as larger catalytic converters, additional filters, metal fuel lines, and an electronically controlled wastegate to reduce pollutants. These changes do not significantly affect performance but help the engine comply with stringent environmental regulations.
