Specifications

The Ford 6.7 powerstroke engine (V8 Turbo Diesel) is engineered for exceptional power, durability, and heavy-duty capability. Featuring a 90Β° V8 configuration, 32-valve OHV valvetrain, and 6.7-liter displacement, the engine combines a compacted graphite iron block with aluminum cylinder heads for strength and efficient operation. Its high-pressure common-rail direct-injection system and turbocharging help produce between 390 and 500 horsepower and up to 1,200 lb-ft of torque, depending on the model year and calibration. With a dry weight of approximately 970 lb, this engine is built to handle demanding towing, hauling, and commercial applications.

Engine Variants

First Generation (2011-2014)

The first-generation Ford 6.7 powerstroke, introduced for 2011, marked Ford’s transition to designing its own diesel engine, known internally as the β€œScorpion,” rather than relying on Navistar. It produced approximately 390–400 horsepower and 735–800 lb-ft of torque. The engine featured a unique β€œhot V” layout with reverse-flow cylinder heads and a Garrett GT32 dual-sequential turbocharger. Early models were known for issues involving turbocharger ceramic bearings, EGR systems, and the CP4 high-pressure fuel pump, making these components important considerations when evaluating early engines.

Second Generation (2015–2019)

The second-generation 6.7 powerstroke brought significant improvements in performance and durability, producing around 440–450 horsepower and 860–935 lb-ft of torque. Ford replaced the earlier dual-sequential turbocharger with a larger Garrett GT37 variable-geometry turbocharger (VGT), while also strengthening the engine block, upgrading the cylinder heads, and refining the fuel-system calibrated. Overall reliability improved compared with the first generation, although the CP4 high-pressure fuel pump and radiator seam leaks remained components worth monitoring.

Third Generation (2020–Present)

The third-generation Ford 6.7 powerstroke received a major redesign focused on increased power, durability, and efficiency. Depending on configuration, output ranges from approximately 475–500 horsepower and 1,050–1,200 lb-ft of torque, with High Output variants introduced for 2023 and later models. Key updates include rugged steel pistons, a higher-pressure 36,000-psi fuel system, redesigned lightweight structural engine blocks, and a 10-speed TorqShift automatic transmission. High Output versions further enhance performance with water-cooled turbochargers and heavy-duty exhaust manifolds, making this generation substantially more capable for demanding towing and heavy-duty applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Is a 6.7 powerstroke a good engine?

Yes, the 6.7 powerstroke is a strong and capable diesel engine known for high torque, towing capability, and durability.

  2. How many HP is a 6.7 powerstroke?

The 6.7 powerstroke has produced approximately 390 to 500 HP, depending on the model year and configuration. Later High Output versions can produce up to 500 HP and 1,200 lb-ft of torque.

  3. Which is better, 7.3 Godzilla or 6.7 Powerstroke?

The 6.7 powerstroke is better suited for heavy towing because it produces significantly more low-end torque and is designed for demanding diesel applications. The 7.3L Godzilla is a gasoline V8 that offers a simpler powertrain and can be a practical choice for heavy-duty use without diesel-specific systems.

  4. Which 6.7L diesel engine is better, Dodge Cummins or Ford Power Stroke?

The 6.7L Cummins and 6.7 powerstroke are both capable heavy-duty diesel engines, but they differ in design, power delivery, and the trucks in which they are offered. Your selection may totally vary depending on the choice.
