The Navistar DT466 engine is a legendary 7.6L inline-six diesel engine built for exceptional durability, reliability, and long service life. Designed with a robust wet-sleeve construction, it allows for easier overhauls and extended engine lifespan, making it a preferred choice in medium-duty trucks, school buses, and construction equipment. Delivering between 170 and 300 horsepower and up to 860 lb-ft. of torque, the DT466 provides strong, consistent performance for demanding workloads. 

It features a turbocharged and intercooled setup for improved efficiency and power, along with a water-cooled system to maintain optimal operating temperatures. Over its production run, it incorporated advanced fuel systems from mechanical injection to HEUI and later common rail technology ensuring adaptability and improved performance across generations. Engine Variants

DT466 (1973–1981)

The original version of the DT466 featured a rugged design with mechanical direct injection and was available in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged forms, establishing its reputation for reliability and simplicity.

DT466B (1982–1987)

This updated variant improved durability by reducing oil consumption through a redesigned ring pack, while also featuring a higher compression ratio of 16.3:1 and stronger main and connecting rod bearings.

DT466C (1987–1992)

The DT466C brought further refinements, including larger lifters, enhanced lubrication systems, and the addition of a Bosch MW injection pump for improved fuel delivery and performance.

DTA466

The “A” designation stands for after cooled, meaning these models were equipped with air-to-water or air-to-air after cooling systems to boost efficiency, increase power output, and meet evolving emissions requirements.
