The Honda H22A4 engine is a 2.2L DOHC VTEC inline-four engine delivering 195 HP, designed for high-revving performance, efficient cooling, and reliable naturally aspirated power. The Honda H22A4 is a performance-focused 2.2-liter (2,157 cc) DOHC 16-valve inline-four engine developed for the 1997–2001 Prelude. Featuring an aluminium open-deck block with Fibber Reinforced Metal (FRM) cylinder liners, it offers improved heat dissipation and durability. 

Equipped with an 87 mm bore and 90.7 mm stroke, the engine produces 195 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 156 lb-ft. of torque at 5,250 rpm, supported by a 10.0:1 compression ratio and a 7,400 rpm redline. Equipped with Honda’s VTEC system and sequential port fuel injection, the H22A4 delivers strong mid-range torque and excellent high-RPM performance. Its open-deck design enhances cooling efficiency for naturally aspirated applications, making it a reliable choice for enthusiasts seeking responsive and consistent power.

H22A4 Base (Prelude)

The H22A4 Base variant was used in the 1997–2001 USDM Prelude Base and SE models, delivering 195 horsepower with a focus on smooth, naturally aspirated performance. Featuring the standard open-deck design with FRM cylinder liners, it offered reliable operation, efficient cooling, and strong mid-range power. This version was available with both 5-speed manual and automatic transmissions, making it a versatile option for both daily driving and spirited performance.

H22A4 Type SH (ATTS-equipped)

The H22A4 Type SH variant retains the same core engine specifications as the base model but is specifically configured to work with Honda’s Active Torque Transfer System (ATTS). Found in the 1997–2001 Prelude Type SH, this setup enhances handling by distributing torque between the front wheels during cornering. While engine output remains at 195 horsepower, the integration with ATTS provides improved stability and a more performance-oriented driving experience.

H22A4 Australian VTi-R / VTi-R ATTS

The H22A4 was used in the 1997–1998 Prelude VTi-R and VTi-R ATTS models, offering similar performance figures to the USDM versions. These variants maintained the same 2.2L VTEC configuration, delivering strong high-revving power and reliability. The VTi-R ATTS model additionally featured the torque-vectoring ATTS system, improving cornering performance while retaining the engine’s naturally aspirated characteristics.
