The Toyota 22R is a 2.4-liter (2,366 cc) inline-4 engine with a single overhead cam (SOHC) and 8 valves, produced roughly between 1981 and 1995. It features a bore of 92.0 mm and a stroke of 89.0 mm, with a compression ratio around 9.0:1. Early versions use a carburetor fuel system, while later ones have electronic fuel injection (in the 22R-E variant). The engine produces between 98 to 110 horsepower (72–81 kW) and 174 to 187 Nm of torque, depending on the version. It has a firing order of 1-3-4-2, a cast-iron block, and an aluminum cylinder head. 

Known for reliability and longevity, common maintenance concerns include timing chain wear and, over very high mileage, potential head gasket issues. The 22R is widely praised for its durability and ease of repair.

The Toyota 22RE is equipped with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, which boosts both efficiency and everyday drivability. This modernized fuel delivery setup provides smoother acceleration, easier cold start and a better fuel mileage. Early versions of the 22RE is generated around 105 hp, while later models reached up to about 113 hp that offers strong durability and reliability making it a standout choice in Toyota trucks throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. 

Toyota 22R-TE

The 22R-TE stands out as the rarest and most unique engine in the 22R lineup. Equipped with EFI and a factory-installed turbocharger, it delivers a substantial performance increase compared to the standard naturally aspirated versions. With output figures of roughly 135 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque, the 22R-TE provides much stronger acceleration and better towing capability. Produced only between 1986 and 1988, this turbocharged model has become a prized find among enthusiasts and collectors. Although more complex than other variants, it still retains the durability of the original 22R while offering distinctive, factory-engineered turbo power.
