The Ford C6 transmission is a heavy-duty 3-speed automatic engineered for high-torque engines and demanding workloads. Introduced in 1966, it uses a Simpson compound planetary gear set, durable cast-aluminum (or early cast-iron) case, and a hydraulically controlled valve body with vacuum modulation for shift quality. Gear ratios are 2.46:1 (1st), 1.46:1 (2nd), and 1.00:1 (3rd) with no overdrive, and it is paired with a large, efficient torque converter built to handle significant power without overheating.

The C6 was produced with several bellhousing patterns (including Windsor, 385-series big block, and FE) to fit a wide range of engines, and its internal components such as heavy-duty clutches, bands, and a robust input shaft contribute to its reputation for near-indestructible performance. Known for its simplicity, reliability, and ability to support modified engines, the C6 became a staple in trucks, muscle cars, drag racing, off-roading, and towing applications, remaining a popular choice even decades after production.

Ford F-Series Trucks (1967–1996)

The C6 transmission was widely used in Ford’s full-size F-Series trucks due to its exceptional strength and reliability. Designed to handle high torque and heavy workloads, it performed well in towing, hauling, and demanding job-site conditions. Commonly paired with F-100, F-150, F-250, and F-350 models, the C6 offered consistent durability and long service life under hard use.

Ford Broncos (1978–1991)
