The 4R70W transmission is a Ford electronically controlled, four-speed, rear-wheel-drive automatic transmission recognized for its wide-ratio gearing of 2.84:1 first, 1.55:1 second, 1.00:1 third, and 0.70:1 overdrive, which improves both acceleration and fuel economy. It features full electronic shift control and torque-converter lockup managed by the PCM, along with an improved overdrive band compared to earlier AOD designs. Evolving from the AOD-E, the 4R70W incorporates strengthened internal components, with later models using mechanical diodes instead of roller clutches for increased durability.

In stock form it is well-suited for many Ford V6 and V8 applications, and in performance-built configurations it is commonly capable of handling 450–500 lb-ft or more of torque, making it a popular and reliable upgrade for street and performance Ford vehicles.

Transmission Varaints

4R70E

The 4R70E is the electronic evolution of the 4R70W, introduced in the mid-1990s. It has four forward gears with overdrive, and its “E” denotes electronic control. This transmission uses electronic solenoids instead of purely mechanical shift controls, allowing the PCM (engine computer) to control shift timing, line pressure, and torque converter lockup more precisely. It was widely used in Ford full-size cars, SUVs, and trucks with 4.6L and 5.4L engines. While robust, early 4R70E units were prone to pump and valve body wear in high-mileage applications.

4R75W

The 4R75W is a heavy-duty, electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission developed by Ford, primarily used in rear-wheel-drive trucks and SUVs. It is an evolution of the 4R70W, featuring reinforced internal components such as upgraded clutches, a stronger torque converter, and enhanced gearset durability to handle higher torque outputs. The transmission uses a wide-ratio design for better low-end torque and fuel efficiency at highway speeds, and it is equipped with electronic controls for adaptive shift logic, allowing smoother gear changes based on driving conditions.  

4R75E

The 4R75E is essentially the electronically controlled evolution of the 4R75W, combining the strength of the 4R75W with full electronic shift management. The “E” signifies electronic control, allowing the PCM to optimize shift points, line pressure, and torque converter lockup for better efficiency, smoother shifts, and improved durability under high load or towing. This is the most modern, durable, and versatile version of this family.
