What we offer

Ford Fusion transmission specifications evolve significantly across generations, reflecting changes in performance, efficiency, and drivetrain technology. Early models (mid-2000s) featured 5-speed manual IB5 transmissions and 5-speed Aisin Warner automatics, mainly paired with 2.3L and 3.0L engines and offered exclusively in front-wheel drive. As the Fusion lineup matured, Ford transitioned to more advanced 6-speed automatics, with the 6F35 becoming the most widely used transmission across 2010–2020 models. This unit was paired with the 2.5L naturally aspirated engine and the 1.5L, 1.6L, and 2.0L EcoBoost engines, delivering smoother shifting and improved fuel economy. Select trims with the 2.0L EcoBoost introduced all-wheel drive, while most models remained FWD.

Transmission choice is engine-specific, with no interchangeability across all trims, and maintenance requirements vary most notably, the 6F35 mandates Ford Mercon LV fluid, while earlier Aisin units use different specifications, making correct fluid selection essential for longevity and performance.

Compatible Models

Ford 6F35 Automatic Transmission

The Ford 6F35 is a widely used 6-speed automatic transmission designed for transverse, front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive applications. Beyond the Ford Fusion (2010–2020), it was commonly installed in vehicles such as the Ford Escape, Ford Edge (2.0L), Ford Focus (select markets), Ford Taurus (2.0L EcoBoost), and Lincoln MKZ and MKC models equipped with 2.0L or 2.5L engines. Known for its balance of durability and efficiency, the 6F35 supports both naturally aspirated and EcoBoost engines and requires Ford Mercon LV fluid.

Mazda FNR5 5-Speed Automatic Transmission

The Mazda FNR5 is a 5-speed automatic transmission produced by Mazda and used extensively in mid-2000s Ford and Mazda vehicles before Ford transitioned to in-house 6-speed units. In addition to early Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan models with 2.3L and 3.0L engines, the FNR5 was also found in the Mazda6, Mazda Tribute, Ford Escape, and Mercury Mariner. This transmission is known for its smooth operation and solid reliability, but it uses Mazda-specific fluid requirements rather than Ford Mercon LV, making proper fluid selection essential for long service life.

Ford HF35 eCVT Transmission

The Ford HF35 eCVT (electronically controlled continuously variable transmission) is specifically engineered for hybrid powertrains and is not interchangeable with conventional automatic transmissions. It is used in hybrid models such as the Ford Fusion Hybrid and Energi, Ford Escape Hybrid, Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, and C-Max Hybrid. Unlike traditional gear-based automatics, the HF35 uses a power-split design that combines electric motors with a planetary gearset to optimize efficiency and regenerative braking. This transmission is highly reliable when serviced correctly but requires specialized hybrid transmission fluid and expert handling due to its integrated electric components.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How do I know if my Ford Fusion transmission is failing?

From my experience, warning signs include delayed shifting, slipping gears, harsh engagement, shuddering, and transmission warning lights.

  2. Are Ford Fusion transmission problems common?

Some model years had reported issues, especially with automatic units. Regular fluid service and early repairs help prevent major failures.

  3. Is it better to repair or replace a Ford Fusion transmission?

If damage is internal or severe, replacement is usually more cost-effective and reliable than repeated repairs.

  4. Does the Ford Fusion transmission require special maintenance?

Yes. Even “sealed” transmissions benefit from periodic fluid inspections to extend lifespan and maintain smooth shifting.

  5. Can I install a used or remanufactured Ford Fusion transmission?

Yes, many owners choose used or remanufactured units to save costs while restoring factory-level performance.
