The NV4500 transmission is a robust 5-speed manual gearbox designed for heavy-duty trucks, featuring a cast-iron case, aluminum top cover, and a strong internal gearsetgear set engineered for high torque applications. It comes with a deep granny low 1st gear (5.61:1 for GM models and 5.04:1 for Dodge) and a 0.73:1 overdrive 5th gear for improved highway efficiency. Depending on the application, it uses either a 23-spline (Dodge) or 32-spline (GM and some Dodge HD) output shaft, and offers synchronized gears on all forward speeds later Dodge versions also added synchros for 1st and 2nd.

With a torque capacity around 460–475 lb-ft, a durable design, and excellent heat resistance, the NV4500 remains one of the most dependable and widely used manual transmissions for towing, off-roading, and performance truck builds.

GM NV4500 (1992–2007)

GM’s NV4500 variant featured unique gearing, a 1.25″ 10-spline input shaft, and brand-specific tailhousing and bellhousing patterns tailored to Chevrolet and GMC 2500/3500 trucks. Known for its 5.04 first gear and strong overdrive, it paired well with small-block and big-block V8s as well as the 6.5L turbodiesel. GM’s version delivered excellent drivability both loaded and unloaded, offering smoother shifts and flexible performance in a wide range of work-truck, towing, and off-road scenarios.

NV4500HD

The NV4500HD has become the preferred choice for engine swaps thanks to its high torque capacity, adaptability, and massive parts support. Enthusiasts typically strengthen these units further with upgraded 5th-gear retention systems, cryo-treated gears, heavy-duty synchros, and custom input or output shafts to match LS engines, Cummins swaps, SBCs, Hemis, and various transfer cases. This variant’s combination of durability, reliability, and versatility makes it one of the most trusted transmissions for high-power off-road builds and custom performance applications.

NV4500LD

This durable 5-speed manual transmission commonly used in GM gas-powered trucks and Dodge light-duty applications, especially behind V8 engines like the 5.2L and 5.9L Magnum. Known for its strong cast-iron case, synchronized gears and a versatile 5.61:1 first gear, the NV4500LD offers smooth shifting, good reliability, and solid torque capability for work trucks and daily-use pickups. It was widely chosen for light-duty applications due to its balance of strength, serviceability, and compatibility with various gas engine platforms.
