The Toyota R154 transmission is a legendary 5-speed manual transmission, widely regarded for its durability and performance, especially in 1JZ and 2JZ-GTE applications. With a stock torque capacity of around 315 lb-ft, it is built to handle high-stress scenarios, and with modifications, it can reliably manage 600–700 horsepower, making it a favorite among tuners and enthusiasts. Weighing roughly 100 lbs. (45 kg), the R154 strikes a balance between strength and manageable weight for performance builds. Its input shaft features a 21-tooth, 29.8 mm spline, ensuring compatibility with high-torque engines.

The transmission’s gear ratios are designed for both acceleration and top-end cruising, with 3.25:1 in 1st gear, 1.955:1 in 2nd, 1.31:1 in 3rd, 1.0:1 in 4th, and a tall 0.753:1 in 5th, complemented by a 4.22:1 reverse gear. These ratios provide a mix of strong launch performance and comfortable highway driving, making it versatile for street, track, and drag applications.  

Transmission Variants

Early Model (1987–1992 MKIII Supra – 7M-GTE)

This version of the R154 has a “sealed” or direct-mount shifter, which attaches straight to the transmission with no extra linkage. It uses the early 6-bolt base pattern and is known for its durability. Stock torque capacity is around 315 lb-ft, and the gear ratios are 3.25:1 for 1st, 1.955:1 for 2nd, 1.31:1 for 3rd, 1.0:1 for 4th, 0.753:1 for 5th, and 4.22:1 for reverse. Weighing about 100 lbs. (45 kg), it’s a reliable choice for stock or lightly tuned engines.

Late Model (1993–2004 JZX90/JZX100/JZZ30 – 1JZ-GTE)

These R154s introduced a tripod-style remote shifter linkage, improving shift feel and making them easier to install in swapped vehicles. They also retained a 6-bolt pattern but with slightly updated internals. The gear ratios remain the same as earlier models, but the smoother shifting makes them preferred for street and performance builds.

JZX90/JZZ30

These versions have the tripod-style shifter with the early 6-bolt pattern. They are similar to the late-model R154 in design but often have older internal parts, making them strong enough for moderate power builds without heavy upgrades.

JZX100

This R154 features the tripod shifter with the late-model 6-bolt pattern. It often comes with stronger internals, like 3-piece synchro’s, which make it better suited for high-horsepower engines. Stock torque is still around 315 lb-ft, but these upgraded internals allow it to handle 600–700+ hp with modifications.

JZX110/Verossa

Known as the “far rear shift” or non-remote shift R154, this version uses the late-model 6-bolt pattern and is widely considered the strongest factory R154. It has reinforced internals and a robust case, making it ideal for high-power applications while still maintaining smooth shifting.

R150 (2WD Hilux)

While the R150 shares some parts with the R154, it is a completely different gearbox. It’s sometimes swapped into performance builds, but its internal design and strength are different, so it’s not a direct replacement for an R154.
