The FA20 Engine is a high-revving, naturally aspirated 2.0-liter flat-four boxer engine engineered by Subaru in collaboration with Toyota to deliver pure driving performance and balance. Designed with an aluminum block and heads, DOHC 16-valve architecture, and a perfectly square 86 mm bore and stroke, the FA20 achieves an ideal blend of responsiveness and efficiency. Its standout feature is Toyota’s advanced D-4S dual fuel-injection system, which combines direct and port injection for crisp throttle response, cleaner combustion, and strong power delivery across the rev range.

With a high 12.5:1 compression ratio, a 7,400 rpm redline, and output of approximately 200+ horsepower, the FA20 emphasizes linear power, reliability, and a low center of gravity—qualities also appreciated in performance-oriented engines like the 2JZ engine. Engine Variant

FA20D

The FA20D is a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine developed by Subaru and Toyota for rear-wheel-drive sports cars such as the Toyota 86, Subaru BRZ, and Scion FR-S. It has a displacement of 1,998 cc, an 86.0 mm bore and 86.0 mm stroke, also featuring an aluminum block and aluminum cylinder heads with a DOHC 16-valve configuration.

The engine uses Toyota’s D-4S dual fuel-injection system (direct and port injection) and Subaru’s AVCS variable valve timing. It runs a high 12.5:1 compression ratio, produces approximately 200–205 hp (149–153 kW) at around 7,000 rpm, and 205–212 Nm (151–156 lb-ft) of torque at around 6,400 rpm, with a redline of about 7,400 rpm. The flat-four layout provides a low center of gravity, emphasizing balanced handling, high-revving performance, and driver engagement.

FA20DIT

The Subaru FA20DIT is a 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injection, horizontally opposed four-cylinder (boxer) engine featuring an all-aluminum block and heads with a DOHC 16-valve layout. It has a displacement of 1,998 cc with a square 86.0 mm bore and 86.0 mm stroke, and employs a twin-scroll turbocharger for improved throttle response and torque delivery. The engine uses Subaru’s Dual AVCS variable valve timing and a high-efficiency direct-injection system, contributing to strong power output and thermal efficiency. The FA20DIT produces approximately 268 hp and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque, delivering a broad, usable powerband while maintaining compact dimensions.
